What is an audiogram?

An audiogram is an exam that evaluates your hearing ability. It records the softest sounds you can hear at different frequencies (tones), measured in decibels (dB). It is the basis for recommending the most appropriate hearing aid.

The horizontal axis shows frequency (pitch) in Hertz (Hz)

The vertical axis shows intensity (volume) in decibels (dB)

Different symbols represent the right and left ears

Key Elements

Frequency (Hz)

Low frequencies (125-500 Hz) correspond to low-pitched sounds, such as drum sounds.
Mid frequencies (500-2000 Hz) include most speech sounds.
High frequencies (2000-8000 Hz) include higher-pitched sounds like bird chirping.

Intensity (dB)

0-20 dB: Normal hearing
21-40 dB: Mild hearing loss
41-70 dB: Moderate hearing loss
71-90 dB: Severe hearing loss
91+ dB: Profound hearing loss

Symbols

O in red - right ear
X in blue - left ear
